A Report from the 2014 Chickasaw Nation Dynamic Women Conference and Forum

Every April, the Chickasaw Nation hosts the Annual Chickasaw Dynamic Women’s Conference and Forum. The event includes panel discussions, a forum, and topical presentations. This year, the event was held in Sulphur, OK in the Artesian Hotel and at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Dr. Traci Morris, as a member of the Chickasaw Nation, has participated in this event annually since 2009.

Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby said, “The Chickasaw Dynamic Women’s Conference and Forum is a celebration of the accomplishments of vibrant Chickasaw women where we honor these dynamic individuals who continue to strengthen and fortify the Chickasaw Nation and their community through good works and visionary leadership.”

This year’s featured speaker was Dr. Shannon Speed. A dedicated Chickasaw anthropologist, Dr. Speed was named 2013 Chickasaw Nation Dynamic Woman of the Year. Dr. Speed is a committed advocate of collaborative research, working in Mexico and in Texas. She is currently an associate professor of Anthropology and Director of Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Texas.

Homahota Consulting’s President, Dr. Traci Morris, an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, moderated a panel titled “The Creative View” with  Chickasaw actress Nancy McDoniel, Chickasaw Artist Erin Shaw and Chickasaw Educator Kristina Kirtley.
